Pick a pallate

Pick your fonts (I prefer sans fonts, but that's just me)

Keep graphics to a minimum

Keep layout simple; header over 2 col; footer or header, body, footer

Make it a fixed size, not completely fluid

Don't get too attached to it as it'll probably get hacked on Smile

Yep 100% agreed.. look at www.stefan-recklingloh.de ( ok maybe to puristic. Watch it with Mozilla if you have) but i prefer it plain and simple.

I mostly dont use graphics. CSS will do it too.

Font: Sans Serife for Headlines, Serife for bodytext.

Ok no frames, no JavaScript, no Flash... what else?

JS: mouseover are ok for me.
NO mystery navigation (like appearing 2. Navigation-Buttons, that disappear, when you click one, that layer-stuff...)
a fixed cockpit section (search, login, contact, ...)
place for banners (we'll need sponsors!)
no frames please
logical symbols like (link outside, link inside, link down/up to top)
breadcrump navigation
black on white bodytext
...

I'll try to complete my list in the german board for you, amnesius, and the others. If someone interested, who cannot understand german, ask me, I'll translate then.

Hi folks,

dull and myself will discuss a draft of a design guideline on the phone this weekend and present the results here as soon as we have something which can prove a discussion in here.

basic ideas:

lightweight design, avoiding graphics if possible.

no javascript will be needed for navigation/display

breadcrump navigation ( to show where you are and where you came from )

light background color, but not white

serife fonts for body text to make it more readable

sans serife text for headlines ( looks better then serife )

3 colum oriented page ( we have to check if its not too confusing )

space for ads on the right side

(...)

More to come/ suggestions welcome..

Cheers

Played a bit with colors tonight.

Goal is to find 2 ~ 3 basic colors to use on OpenCaching.com

You may find the result here:

www.stefan-recklingloh.de/opencaching.html

Comments welcome

Cheers

Comments.

I like sans throughout (but that's just me).

I like contrast and 'negative' effects for some things ... like white/yellow/light anything against maroon, deep blue, forest green, etc. it can be a nice effect for headings and other items that break the page.

Please only 2 cols Sad .... even though the format can vary for a pda or small screen the content still has to be there ... 2 cols makes you be more thoughtful and organized to what is on the page in what order ... which will be important on the smaller formats.

Think separation form and content ... again, if you haven't yet, take a peak at css zen garden ... everything you see there is *1* common xhtml page, with just a style sheet varying .... granted there is a fair bit of graphic magic that we'd need to avoid, but still, consider the possibilities.

Well in fact i do so too.. But serife fonts are more easy to read at long texts. I think we can finaly decide about this when the pagedesign is finished.

I dont think its a good idea to use contrast and negative color effects for this site. Just to make it easier to read for handicaped ppl ( colorblinds, etc.. )
And on the other hand we should try to make the page accessable from browsers running b/w screens. You mentioned PDA's. Btw my Palm is one of those Greyscale devices.

Yes i had a look at it several times already. It looks really nice but if you have a look at the source you will notice they make use of absolute positionings ( for eg. ) and i think we shouldnt blow up the css too much and take care that you can access the site without having a css enabled browser ( PDA ).

My comment to your comment Wink

Cheers

Yes, but we'll have long texts, that aren't easily read on screen and we'd help with reading as much as we can.

Hmm. I guess we'll have A LOT of Information. It might get too turbulent with massive headlines like that.

Or one?

We'll have many authors. We'll need even more separation of design and content than: a CMS.

PS: Please sneak into the german speaking board for OC.de http://www.opencaching.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=78. We'll try to bring our Ideas here as well, but we might do it with delay, beeing so *busy*, *busy* Wink

Re: non-css capable devices

That's why they get a different stylesheet, or none at all ... if you do the page markup in straight xhtml and the client can't support styles it renders basically in linear order with default browser behaviour a <h1> tag has some default behaviour in a browswer ... and a <ul>, <li> set does too. So if the structure of the page is something like header, nav, body footer and there is no stylesheet, or a reduced capability ... they get a text rendition of the site. This also has the advantage that screen readers have much less difficulty with the page ... which actually *helps* accessibility and lets you be a liitle more 'daring' with the color scheme for browsers with higher capabilities.

The serifed body text isn't working for me. I'd much prefer sans-serif.

Also, can we use the "fall back" groups of fonts?

Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif

Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif

"Courier New", Courier, mono

etc.

CR

That's a nice start ... I'm with CR though I still like sans for everything ... use line spacing to make it readable if you're concerned that the serif space gave you a buffer ...

Also, make we should ultimately make the nav stuff a <ul> group and style it so that it does something sane on a different formate ... and gets rid of the | ... look at the home page and style sheet to see what I mean.
