Decisions are made by those who show up. This is a universal truth. By and large most folks don’t bother to participate when decisions are being made that impact them. Only later when they are inconvenienced do they wake up and speak out. By then it’s usually too late.
A lot of good geocachers are taking a wait and see attitude about this site. That is the worst possible thing to do. Everyone waiting to see what happens, should be in the forums stating what they want to see this site become. Anyone who has some skills in areas we need should step up to the plate. The solutions they bring to the table will help build the organization and the site.
Things we need to cover include: Legal, Marketing, Membership, Volunteer Coordinator, Graphics, Landowner Relations, Finance, Site Development, and Administration.
Some local groups have shown an interest. They will be contacted in the near future to help define the organizational structure of opencaching. If other groups are interested then please get in touch. Individual members are also welcome. Individuals on the teams mentioned above will be the ones fleshing out the starting policies.
If you still want to wait and see that’s fine your vote is automatically support for those who do step up, get involved and make decisions. If after seeing what happens you don’t like the result you can get involved later and change things. That’s because we are serious about this organization being owned by geocachers. As a result they will have the ability to effect change. Still there is no way around that what organization looks like when it takes life will be based on decisions made by the people who show up. |

I haven't thought this all out yet, but it seems to me the best way to get this off the ground is to seek some kind of affiliation between already existing local groups. Find three or four local groups that would like to participate in an umbrella organization and put something in place.
And keep the organization separate from the Web sites and databases offered by opencaching.com or opencaching.de (or geocaching.com or navicache.com, for that matter), at least for now. The techs on this board look like they are designing something open enough and flexible enough to serve the needs of the open geocaching organization, whatever that might be determined to be as the organization is born and matures. Letting the two groups (the tech side and organizational side) work independently for now is the surest way to swift progress.

| Not trying to be annoying, but what specifically are you referring too? (what needs to be done?) |

Welch it varies from simple things like needing a logo, to getting the local groups together to create the organizational structure that they can live with and which puts geocaching under geocacher control.
Take finance. We need to have a donation system to start until we have something that members would find worth paying for membership. There may be grants out there to be had it would be nice to find out if we can snag one or two to help us get off the ground. A accounting system needs to be developed with controls so the president can't wander off with all the member funds. There is more to finance than that simple picture.
Each part has a similar role that helps build an organization. Plus there will be coordination between the teams helping to build this. For example one data goal is to have data available to local groups for stats. Legal shouldn't write a TOS for the site that prevents that from happening. A lot of coordination between the groups will be needed.
In reality everything needs to be done. This organization is an idea that needs to be brought to life. With money I could pay people to do each and every task, build this organization, pop a site up and call it a day. Yet it would miss the goal of putting geocaching in the hands of geocachers.
If geocacher groups and cachers build this organization, then it really does belong to them. |

| I'm not sure what all I could do, but I'm ready to help! I'm currently a member of two small geocaching groups here in Missouri and although we aren't near the size of SLAGA or the KC Group, we have several members that are willing to help when it pertains to geocaching. |
