If you're going to design a logo here's what you gotta do. Flesh out the idea and then turn it into line art. You'll have to change it a little to show definition between any colors that you have. Make it small, like 50x50 pixels, if that works then you have a canidate.

Remember, in order for a logo to work, it not only has to look good large on a webpage, but small as well. It has to be strong as a single color silkscreened on a t-shirt, too!

Just something to think about.

CR

PS: with all of that said. It might be best to just get a working logo going and then have a contest for "official" logo later. After we get a few hundred followers, annouce the contest and call for submissions. After a certain date have a vote. The winner gets major kudos as the creator of the OC logo. Comments?

Good advice on all counts CR ... thanks.

And I got an answer from Tim Donaldson. I post the mail here (my request is included down the line):

So! If it's for me, we take the yellow GxO-Logo from dull.

If we should find a better logo somewhere down the road, we can switch anyway (every webpage does some re-design after some years Wink Seriously: I don't think, we'll find a better one in the next time. Maybe the OC-communitiy will find one some day. But we will have to have a community first. My bet.

My critic is that the logo doesn't impress me at all.

Funny it impressed me at once - it's so _simple_, strait, direct, strong in that.

It looks too fragile in my opinion and I guess it won't stay in someones memory. Besides it has small details (text), so it can't be made too small:

As for the text, that is a 'plus' - I might not want it added on tees for example. I like the graphical picture stand alone. I did some polishing on the logo. I'm NOT a artistic person, nor do I know my GIMP more than necessary. I added another pix to the Gx to make it somewhat stronger. Then there must be a way to export the image better, so that these pixel-style gets smoothed. I didn't find a way for GIF in the hurry I am in, but have a look at it as png (yes, I know, filesize isn't acceptable):

Here you'll find gif-versions as well

Looks artificial to me. No life, not down-to-earth. More like a trendy, stylish cocktail bar.

@ CR:
I'd stick to the Gx-Theme. At least at the moment. Why?

- it's 'open source'. It is already the symbol that is connected with the 'open' movement of geocaching. OC is just starting, the feelings and movement is older - and since a longer time connected with this symbol.

- it refers to 'Geocaching'. Let us name the hobby/sport what we like - for most geocachers it will remain 'Geocaching'. We will have to win the people, so we have to pick them up where they already stand (german phrase - don't know if this works in English?).

The ideas people have for OC are not totally new, it's geocaching, it's being free of commercial handcuffs. I think it much smarter to not change absolutely everything in order to start OC.

If later on OC is becoming a real movement, then I'm sure, other things, names, logo ideas whatsoever will show up. To start I would like to gather around, what already exists in the community. People have waited for this opportunity, don't throw away all they based upon so far.

just my 2 cent

Sissy-n-CR clean version -- I like that one; though a little color on it would be ok too ...

Is it really the will of the group that the funny o-x-g thing is the base? I've seen almost no other proposals. Nobody going outside the box? ...

Mozilla took a dinosaur of all things, GNome took a stylized foot. A logo needs to be identifiable and associative -- beyond that there's a lot of interpretive room.

An umbrella
Rabbit ears
A monkey
Line art of a river and prarie
A hummingbird
A stylized arrow/pointer
A character from an ancient (or not so ancient) culture symbolizing 'the travel', ' the journey' -- Aztec, Mayan, Native American, etc. ....

I'm not saying any of those are better than what's proposed, I'm just saying is seems like folks got fixated on the o-x-g thing and stopped thinking.

A sun with the o-x-g thing ... I'm just really questioning "Is that the best we've got" because it's the "only thing we've got" or does it stand on the merits ... tough to say with nothing to compare it to.

Oh Marq, we did have so many more in the beginning!

It's not been by accident, that the Gx was favoured. It was a progress.

OK, I'll be quiet now ... there certainly were more options, though I don't really think much variation. ... but that's just me and I've already ceded my lack of expertise in this area.

Relooking at all those submissions, one strikes me as a possible compromise candidate. Call it the Go symbol (Go... hmmm... not bad).

It's Sissy-n-CR #4. Look at the logo on the right. Take that idea and apply it to the free-form G from the Gx logo, replacing the X, and you might have something I'd switch my vote to. You might even make that center bulls-eye red and leave a tiny hollow middle so that those who want a red "o" in the logo can see one.

What would you have? You'd have something recognizable to the geocaching community, yet different enough not to be confused. You'd eliminate the objections that the Gx reminds some of a religious symbol, eliminating yet another possible confusion. And you'd have a simple, bold, easily recognizable, easily reproduceable logo. ... or not.

[quote="GeoGerard"]On the Geocaching.nl forum a member called Bytheway posted these:[quote]

My first impression was: Uh, japanese [what are those comic kids called]... You know, theses Sailor Moon followers.

I find it to playful, also the game with the word 'open' - nice idea to substitute the NSWO with it. But in the result it looks a bit childish to me. Sorry.

But beneath that: two many (too weak) colours, dithering, to small details.

I'd say: Go for something really simple. I know, that is the most difficult thing in the world. I didn't find anything worth ist - not in the contest, not now. That's what struck me at the GxO. It's simple, a bit mysterious and will look great on a tee Wink)

I hate this thing, too. Especially since it's a thread where I always sound so negativ ;-(

So I try to tell my thoughts positively:
I'd like something 'simple'
=> one main theme/motif, not many details
I'd like something 'basic'.
=> Something that looks 'down to earth'. Which looks like walking outdoor, mud on the hand, sun in the face
I'd like something with strong colours from nature
=> green (no way=GC.com) gras/trees, blue (???=NC.com) water, yellow sun, brown earth (but find a beautiful brown).
I'd like something friendly, positiv
=> not alarming
I'm not sure, if I would like a 'real(istic)' theme btw. I think I'd prefered some graphical thing.

The bootprint one so far was best for me. Only that I don't like the alarming green and I dislike the bootprint for reasons, marq already listed.
