Development and even a soft launch isn't a problem ... it's when the site succeeds that this stuff will be needed. So if you know of a bandwidth or hardware benefactor let's talk about it.

Depending on initial specs of the type of bandwidth we would need, I may (repeat...may) have a place to host the site.

No, I don't mean my little Optiplex 450 running Linux in my basement.

I'm notoriously stingy and shopped this pretty hard, but I recently flipped $50 to http://webhostingbuzz.com/ for a site. 10GB/month, 1GB of disk, GGI, Perl, PHP, SQL, and so on was the best deal I found.

While the site I'm bringing up is small compared to what this could be "out of the gate" I've had no problems with them in the, uuuuh, eight days I've been a customer, so weight this recommendation accordingly.

Robertlipe would probably tell me I'm notoriously expensive, but I host locally. I've got 5 servers and a dedicated 384k pipe to my house. Of course, I host a number of web sites, email, etc. for several people, so that is why I have that pipe. I'm going to be releasing a stats site on the pipe, so I'll probably have to go full-T1 soon if it takes off.

I guess everyone found this to be a good deal. The site now says "Sold Out." :-(

I'll be getting a 1mbps dedicated connection soon. The only thing it'll be used for is my own personal web browsing, secondary DNS for about a dozen low traffic zones, a few low traffic websites and my personal e-mail server. I should have plenty of bandwidth left over for whatever it could be used for.

The machine I'm using as a server isn't much to speak of, but putting a new box together these days is pretty cheap if you don't want a high-end, industrial grade server.

A nice and fairly cheap hosting company to look into would be lypha(http://www.lypha.com). I am currently using their basic hosting plan for my website. 8.95 a month for 1 gig of space, 50 gig monthly transfer, unlimited pop3 accounts, mysql databases, and subdomains. They support php, cgi, sql. They also have a bunch of software installed for administering the domain and software for user stuff like forums. I've only been using them for a month or so but my initial reaction to the company is good.
