This is all ugly stuff ... I started down this path, thinking that a clone of gc, that had an open database and didn't stifle cache types, was good enough ...

That would be a big step forward, so I'd hate to see this project get bogged down trying to be everything to everyone. Let's first get a place to store things, make it open, then the value-added services will come. The more extensible and flexible the initial design, the easier it will be to get something going quickly and extend it later.

No kidding.

I'll have a forum or two for 'organization' people to go to, but you probably won't see me there except for a first post. The tech side of this is plenty, others can play politiics.

Here in the Netherlands, we hava a rating system on GC caches. Each cacher can rate any geocache (even one they did not find IIRC) from 1 to 10. The score is a division of total score by number of voters. E.g. a cache with 100 voters and an average score of 8.5 would most likely be a great cache and one with an average score of 2.5 will probably be a disappointment.

Why not do something similar on OC? Have two scores: rate how you LIKE the cache (was it worth the time/effort, did you have fun?) and how APPROPRIATE is the cache (is it in the right place legally, is the description non-offensive, etcetea). You might have a very unappropriate cache (in the middle of a breeding colony of rare birds as an example) which is very, very nice to do. You would see two very extreme scores there. You could (and should, in my opinion) give the min/max scores, the number of votes and the average. So a cache with an average of 10 by 1 voter would have a lesser weight than a cache with an average of 8 by 100 voters, at least it would to me. Wink

Ofcourse, each vote could have a freeform field (max. X chars) for comment. "On private property, behind a sign saying so", "Very nice hike through beautfull scenery", etcetera. You could display those if you want, to see why a cache has the scores it has.

I disagree....here in Michigan....we've got approval to approve our own caches. We've got statements of understanding with many municipalities and parks.....and are working on many more. We have a very active forum at www.mi-geocaching.org and new info gets posted all the time. The point is, you can know what rules and regulations might be in place, IF you want to. It takes work, it takes a team of people dedicated to making geocaching a great hobby, and it takes commitment. (All of which by the way, our steering committee at the above mentioned site has in abundance!)

I've never seen the problem with placing caches. Simply ask permission, (jot down the name of the person giving permission on a paper would be a helpful thing.....duh) and place the cache. I've always put on my listed caches that permission was granted by ( whatever organization) and also given them a thanks....
