I'd like to propose that two (at least) categories be added to the database for inclusion. These are not direct objects to be hunted, but can be useful. (More so than public bathrooms, IMHO)
Public Internet Access: When out of town and need to look up something, we are always on the lookout for public libraries. It would be helpful if these are mapped and included.
Free WiFi Access Points: Similar to above but has the advantage of 24/7 access. Legality of access is up to the hunter or poster. User hosted APs would be welcome and I'm thinking of setting a couple up. (Subject of a different topic.)
It would be something of a "score" to find and "place" one. Find logs not accepted, though.
Whatcha think?

I'm torn ...
to me this is nothing but a locationless cache, yet at the same time it would be really hard to police that the access points are actually free and not just unsecure.
At it's worst it could be aiding and abetting a crime to publically list open access points.
On the other hand, it's something that would be useful
I know there's a discussion on this at gc but I haven't kept track of it today. |

This is no different than historical markers or surveying benchmarks. If the database is extensible, then creating new categories will be trivial. Then, let the community decide whether they like creating and hunting such waypoints. _________________ Scout http://GPSgames.org

I don't see it as a "hunting" thing. More of an informational thing.
I'm just saying it might be a good idea to bring it up in the beginning.

It could certainly be argued that after installing tje hardware and reading all of the precautions, and the hotspot is still open, then it's meant to be open.
It's almost like saying the hot chicks don't want to be looked at even though they wear string bikinis to the beach. What the heck are they there for? Tanning is best done nude and string bikinis aren't that good for swimming. What's left?
I see nothing wrong with listing open AP especially if the SSID is ")( Welcome2CRAP"

| It's a locationless cache, but by definition these are not kept current. The problem is best solved by a site who's main goal in life is to track free net access or free hot spots. That way when things change the site can activly delete outdated information. |

It might be best if only cacher owned or sponsored spots be listed. The list would be in flux too much.
The libraries wouldn't change that much though.

On a side note, putting up my own Hotspot isn't as easy as first thought. There are issues that need addressed before doing so--like restricting the access to only the internet and not the other computers on the LAN. (I have multiple computers networked both at home and at work.) _________________ "...been know to miss the finer points." |

Funny, I can't get my computers to talk but net access is the only thing that works. Go figure. |
