I realize that we are still in the very infancy of this site. But, I thought I would go ahead and open up a can of worms now.

We all have ideas of the perfect geocaching site. So, I would like to throw out this question.

Assuming for the sake of argument that opencaching.com is going to be the perfect site, what does this site need to have, provide, enable, etc to make you want to move?

To paraphrase what I have read in several different posts, if we build it, they will come. Build what? I know stats is a big stickler. But, I am willing to bet the vocal minority will disagree on how to do it.

What else besides a stats/leaderboard page? Cache approval process? Stance on virtuals?

If nothing else, we should at least have our list of demands straight so that we can at least be moving in the same, somewhat organized direction.

There is one thing driving me nuts about gc.com: the length of time it takes to get a response to an e-mail. I see people complaining in the forums if they don't receive a response in a day or two. It has sometimes taken weeks before I get a response. I sincerely hope you all will be a bit more on top of things.

Customer service will build this site just like the lack of it is ruining gc.com.

Believe me. I understand the need to provide quality service. However, it is a lot easier said than done. But, I would take it a step further than timely responses to emails and the like.

I think to make this the site that everyone seems to be hoping it will be the powers that be will have to be willing to listen/act/implement features that they personally don't believe are needed or necessary when there is a major push requesting them.

Right now, I think that is the main issue with gc.com and the stats thing.

Are you interested in creative ideas? I have a few. Our team, husband and wife, has varied interests, something gc.com doesn't quite cater to. (I don't mean anything adult in nature either.)

One thing we thought would be cool is a database of historical markers somewhat like the benchmark database. If it is not possible to put together such a database from each individual state, perhaps people can create one. Have people find a historical marker and post it like a cache page. You can create stats based on original finders and other finders. If people feel the need to monitor the markers against cheaters, then they can post a question from the marker and ask that it be answered. The page should not have any info about the marker, just” historical marker at these coordinates. What is the last word on the marker?” I know of at least one marker in the middle of a national forest accessible only by old logging roads so you can have easily accessible ones as well as hard to find ones. I believe a lot of people would be excited about this.

Just one of several thoughts. Take it or leave it, doesn't matter. But if you're building from scratch, then try something new.

Mississippi has a list of Historical markers at the Dept of History and Archives website. If MS has this, I'm sure a lot of other states do too Twisted Evil

Virtuals are a NO. There should be caches on/in Disney and stuff.

We never got any response since 2001, when I proudly announced our newly build german portal for gc.com and asked for some words about using words, logos and so on. Never mind.

Some reactions on mails from german geocachers are naughty at it's best and arrogant at its worse. Sometimes based on different culture, I think.

So what we need is: Support in different languages and supporters, that know the regional conditions!

We'll also need Translations of the basic information. And a system that can handle a multilanguage site!

What I think this site may need:

a) Customer service that is superior to that of the other sites.

b) The ability to move your caches if if / when they are discovered plundered.

c) I have no basic problem with virtuals, as there are a lot of places things out in the world I have not seen. However, if the virtual is located inside a place that requires some sort of admission fee...LIST THE FEE!

d) Quicker listings of caches than I have had happen at other sites. (Yes, I do list all my caches at all the sites I can find....ok I don't list them at sites that aren't in English Very Happy ) I would like as many folks to look for my caches, I look for just about anyone elses caches that are in my area.

e) I am all for listing historic landmarks, and markers, thats what the bloody things are there for! People to look at them!

f) A much better GUI (LOL)

f1) I do build websites, and am willing to help.

Well that is enuff for now.
